Maria Grazia Rosa Domenica D'Amato was (van 1964-1972) de vrouw van muzikant en componist Geoff Muldaur (Jim Kweskin Jug Band, Paul Butterfield's Better Days) en de moeder van singer-songwriter Jenni Muldaur en Claire Muldaur. De nu 78-jarige Maria Muldaur is zelf ook een folk en blueszangeres, die aanvang sixties deel uitmaakte van de “American folk music revival” van NYC’s Greenwich Village. In 1973 brak ze door met haar hit song "Midnight at the Oasis".

Maria D'Amato begon haar carrière in Greenwich Village (dikwijls The Village genoemd), een wijk op het eiland Manhattan, NY. GV was één van de belangrijkste vrijplaatsen van de “tegencultuur” (van zij die zich tegen de gevestigde orde keerden), die in de jaren 1930/1940 veel verzamelaars, ontwikkelaars en zangers van volksmuziek aantrok. In de jaren vijftig werd er veel geëxperimenteerd met drugsgebruik en in de sixties, groeide er de belangstelling van een nieuwe generatie van muziekmakers, die veel leerden van elkaar. Uit deze kruisbestuiving van muziekstijlen en muzikale vernieuwingen kwamen bekende popzangers zoals Neil Diamond en Bob Dylan voort.

Een jugband is een band binnen het akoestische blues- en folk-genre, die gebruik maakt van meerdere traditionele en zelfgemaakte instrumenten (wastobbe bas, wasbord, lepels, beenderen, kazoo…). Oorspronkelijk werd deze muziek in de jaren 1920/1930 door Afro-Amerikanen in het zuiden van de Verenigde staten gemaakt. Een jug is een kruik waarin tonen en geluiden werden gezongen en geblazen met de mond.

Maria D’Amato aka Maria Muldaur maakte eerst deel uit van de Even Dozen Jug Band, die later vele sterren leverde. De dertien koppige EDJB werd in 1963 in NYC opgericht door country blues/ragtime gitarist Stefan Grossman en gitarist/producer Peter Siegel. De andere bandleden waren mandoline speler David Grisman, Steve Katz (Blood, Sweat & Tears), Maria Muldaur, componist Joshua Rifkin (Scott Joplin) en John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful).

Maria werd in 1964 zangeres en violiste bij de Jim Kweskin (& the) Jug Band. Jim Kweskin richtte in de jaren 1960 deze jug band op, die zo’n vijf jaar bestond en die Boston als uitvalbasis had. De andere bandleden waren Fritz Richmond (wastobbe), Geoff Muldaur (gitaar), Bob Siggins en Bruno Wolfe. Op het titelloos album van de band uit 1964 is Maria D’Amato als zangeres te horen. Ze huwt met Geoff Muldaur en samen brengen ze, als de band stopt, twee albums uit (‘Pottery Pie’, 1969 & ‘Sweet Potatoes’, 1972). Maria Muldaur begint haar solocarrière in 1972, wanneer haar huwelijk eindigt.

In 1973 debuteert Maria Muldaur solo met een titelloos album. Hierop staat haar hit single "Midnight at the Oasis" (https://youtu.be/VlrKETxwRvM). Aan het album werkten meerdere bekende muzikanten mee als Ry Cooder, David Lindley, Clarence White, Dr. John, Klaus Voorman, David Grisman en Jim Gordon. In 1974 volgt ‘Waitress in a Donut Shop’. Ook aan dit album werkten bekende muzikanten mee als Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Linda Rondstadt, Jim Gordon, Lowell George, Doc & Merle Watson, Amos Garrett, Dr. John, Paul Butterfield en David Lindley. In deze periode gaat Muldaur samenwerken met Grateful Dead. Ze opent enkele keren voor de band en kan via John Kahn, bassist van de Jerry Garcia Band, meewerken als backing zangeres. In 1974 ontmoet Muldaur bluegrass icoon Peter Rowan en wordt ze de stiefmoeder van zijn dochter Amanda Rowan. Haar 2005-album ‘Lovin' Ol' Soul’ (met Taj Mahal, Tracy Nelson, Pinetop Perkins, Del Rey, Steve James en andere gasten) werd genomineerd was voor een Blues Music Award (W.C. Handy Award) en een Grammy Award in de categorie “Traditional Blues”. In 2013 werd Muldaur genomineerd voor een Blues Music Award (Koko Taylor Award) categorie “Traditional Blues Female”.

Muldaur's 40ste album ‘…First Came Memphis Minnie...’ (a Loving Tribute…) feat. Rory Block, Ruthie Foster, Bonnie Raitt, Phoebe Snow & Koko Taylor… verscheen in 2012. Bij Stony Plain Records wordt deze maand ‘Let’s Get Happy Together‘ uitgebracht. Het is een album dat Muldaur opnam met Tuba Skinny, een 8-koppige straatband uit New Orleans, een band die zich verdiepte in de vroege blues-, jazz- en jugbandmuziek van de jaren 1920/1930. Het is Maria’s 43ste release, haar 9de bij Stony Plain.

Hoe het album tot stand kwam en waarom ze de nummers koos, staat hieronder beschreven bij de tracklist details. Samengevat gaat het over nummers die Maria, zoals de Tuba Skinny band dat doet, selecteert uit materiaal uit de jaren 1920/1930. “I Like You Best of All” werd oorspronkelijk gedaan door de Goofus Five, een populaire band in de jaren 1920. “Let's Get Happy Together” werd geschreven en opgenomen door jazz pianiste Lil Hardin Armstrong (1898-1971), de tweede vrouw van trompettist Louis Armstrong, met wie ze op veel van diens platen in de jaren twintig samenwerkte. “Be Your Natural Self” werd voor het eerst gezongen door een zanger genaamd Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon, die soms zong en optrad als man en soms als vrouw. Hij/zij was een van de eerste openlijk "genderbenders" van het tijdperk! “Delta Bound” werd opgenomen door Ivy Anderson & The Duke Ellington Orchestra en “Swing You Sinners” werd in 1935 opgenomen door Valaida Snow, een virtuoze Amerikaanse jazzmuzikant en entertainer. Ze stond bekend als “Little Louis”, “Queen of the Trumpet”. Ze werd door Louis Armstrong “de op een na beste trompettist ter wereld” genoemd. “He Ain't Got Rhythm” is behept met grappige, slimme teksten van Irving Berlin en werd in de jaren 1930 opgenomen door veel artiesten. “Got the South in My Soul” werd oorspronkelijk opgenomen door The Boswell Sisters. Connie Boswell zong de lead. Dorothy Lamour zong ook met de band. “Patience & Fortitude” is nog een nummer dat oorspronkelijk werd geschreven door de Valaida Snow. Het is een opbeurende kleine preek met een nuttige, positieve boodschap. “Some Sweet Day” werd voor het eerst gedaan door Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon en “Big City Blues”, een maar al te waar verhaal over eenzaamheid, werd oorspronkelijk opgenomen door Annette Henshaw, die een van de meest populaire radiosterren van de jaren dertig was. “Road of Stone”, een rauwe, soulvolle, klagende blues, werd in de jaren 1920 opgenomen door Sweet Pea Spivey, de zus van de beroemde klassieke blueskoningin Victoria Spivey.

He Ain't Got Rhythm: I just love [Irving Berlin]'s droll, clever lyrics! Recorded by many artists in the 1930s... Billie Holiday's rendition with Teddy Wilson, Lester Young, Benny Goodman, et al, is the one that informs our version. - 07. Got the South in My Soul: originally recorded by New Orleans natives, The Boswell Sisters ... fabulous singers with incredible musicianship who sang and swung with all the best big bands of the day. Connie Boswell, who so soulfully sang lead, is one of my favorite singers. - 08. I Go for That: Dorothy Lamour, another New Orleans native, was married to a big bandleader and sang with his band before she became the exotic sultry Hollywood movie star we all remember. I was delighted to discover what a cool singer she was and to find this droll, witty song – “You play the 'uke, you're from Dubuque”... hilarious lyrics! - 09. Patience & Fortitude: another song originally done by the incomparable Valaida Snow... An uplifting little sermonette with a useful, positive message. - 10.
